Chilean retirees are gathering to celebrate the end of the Southern Hemisphere winter, when dense pollution and low temperatures cause fatal respiratory illnesses. The annual parties in early September are a generations-old tradition in Chile, particularly in the capital Santiago, home to about a third of the population and harsh pollution.
