    Dalai Lama visita ciudad cerca del Tíbet, enfurece a China

    TAWANG, India (AP) - El Dalai Lama hizo casi omiso a las protestas de China y viajo el domingo a este remoto poblado himalayo cerca de la frontera con Tíbet, para encabezar cinco días de oraciones en enseñanzas para peregrinos budistas.

    Miles de aldeanos pobres afrontaron temperaturas gélidas y fuertes vientos para tener la rara oportunidad de ver al líder espiritual tibetano.

    Monjes hicieron sonar sus címbalos y trompetas tradicionales tibetanas para saludar al Lama a su arribo al monasterio de Tawang.

    El líder religioso sonrió y charló con la muchedumbre. Un monje le protegía del sol con una enorme sombrilla amarilla, mientras que numerosos otros se postraron ante el Lama mientras éste se dirigía a un salón para encabezar una sesión de rezos.

    El viaje a Tawang, que tiene fuertes lazos con el Tíbet y está en el centro de una disputa fronteriza entre India y China, enfureció a Beijing y aumentó las tensiones entre los dos países.

    China acusa al Dalai Lama de buscar la independencia tibetana, y se muestra especialmente susceptible a protestas contra su control de esa región Himalaya, especialmente luego de violentos disturbios contra el gobierno el año pasado.

    En los días previos a la visita, monjes y residentes pintaron los monasterios de Tawang y limpiaron y adornaron el pueblo, colgando banderolas en las calles y carteles de bienvenida al Lama.

    El domingo, el principal monasterio estaba lleno de flores naranjas, blancas y rojas, mientras jóvenes monjes se movían de un lados a otro culminando los preparativos, en un día frío, ventoso y soleado.

    India y China han estado trabadas en una disputa fronteriza por el estado nororiental de Arunachal Pradesh desde 1962. Las tensiones entre los dos países han empeorado en meses recientes, con ambos gigantes forcejeando por la supremacía política y económica e la región.
