SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - A Chilean newspaper is reporting that the personal data of 6 million citizens was leaked to the Internet.

El Mercurio's Sunday report says the data includes identity card numbers, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mails and academic background.

The article says the information was posted on the Internet early Friday by someone who hacked into servers at the education ministry, the electoral service and the military. The paper says most of the data was promptly removed, and quoted Police Chief Jaime Jara as saying the incident is being investigated.

The police department had no one available Sunday to comment.

El Mercurio says the hacker allegedly wanted to demonstrate a lack of security at government offices.
